We were living on the island of Pico in 1957-58, the time of the Capelinhos volcano. My mother, an uncle, a cousin and a few others from our village took a small boat to visit and film the volcano on a couple of 8mm home movie cameras.

This is my uncle's footage. Some of it was shot during the same trip described above.

After years of missionary work in India and Africa, my uncle, Padre José M. Neves, settled in a parish on the island of Terceira. He was an inveterate documentor who often sent cassette tapes to my parents after they immigrated to America. These tapes were a way of communicating news and messages from family back home on the islands. I found a box of them in my parent's house after they passed away, carefully packed away by my sister, Rosa.
